Makaton signing

Makaton is a form of communication that uses spoken word alongside signing to help with the development of early communication skills.

Babies and young children naturally use gesture before they develop spoken language and Makaton is a natural extension of this. Research shows that Makaton bridges the gap between gesture and verbal communication. It allows young children to build important language skills such as turn taking, eye contact, sharing information and expressing their needs. Makaton reduces frustration for children that may not yet of developed the words to easily express their needs and promotes inclusion because it allows them to communicate across all abilities.

All our senior members of staff are trained to level 2 in Makaton and use Makaton signs as a routine part of our day.

All children take part in regular singing and signing sessions as a fun way of learning the common signs and is something that all our age groups and staff enjoy.
